Ashes to Ashes Tour

June 21 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm CDT
$25.00
ashes to ashes

Welcome to Mobile’s oldest graveyard, where your professional guide will lead you among picturesques tombstones arranged within its walls. Built in response to a deadly outbreak of a horrible disease, the cemtery has a colorful mix of Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, French, English, Spanish and American. Learn about the colorful characters who lived and died within a few miles of this cemetery, and helped Mobile grow from a sleepy colonial outpost into the thriving Port City. This tour includes unique monuments, historic figures, and unusual characters that are buried within the walls of this beautiful cemetery. Guests will hear about the beloved Spanish wife and mother, the brave son and brother slain far from home, and the gold prospector whose body was shipped home in a barrel of rum! Yellow Fever victims are buried here, including those in a secret mass grave just outside the cemetery walls. You’ll also meet most famous resident of the cemetery, Old Joe Caine, the patron saint of Mobile’s Mardi Gras whose tombstone is the gathering place for the darkest and most secretive of our Mardi Gras mystic societies.

  • The tour meets at 753 Government Street in downtown Mobile.
  • Free parking is available in a small lot to the right of the entrance gate.
